Student Pronouns in Canvas (Student guide)

Students have the option to select their pronouns in Axess which will also populate in Canvas. Pronouns will be visible to both the teaching teams and peers in various areas in Canvas, including:

  • Announcements (Group level)
    Discussion post with pronoun next to author name
  • Comment fields such as Announcement and Discussion comments
  • Discussion posts (Course level and Group level)
    Group Discussion post with pronoun next to author name

  • Inbox (when a message is received; pronouns do not display when composing)
    Inbox message with pronoun next to author name

  • Peer Review Assignments
    Peer review student name with pronouns
    and
    Peer review student name with pronouns for submitted view

  • People Tool 
    • Course level
      Name with pronouns in main People tool

    • Group level
      Name with pronouns in Group's People tool

  • Course User Profile Page
    Name with pronouns in User Profile page

In addition to the locations listed above, instructors can see selected pronouns in other areas of Canvas. Setting pronouns is optional and not required. If you need to update your pronouns, please go to Axess
