As soon as you add content to the Syllabus tool in your Canvas course, any Stanford affiliate with a SUNet ID can view your syllabus content at syllabus.stanford.edu, even if your course is unpublished*. This is based on the course setting where the syllabus is available to the Institution. The reason for this visibility setting is to make as many syllabi available as possible to help students with their course planning.
How to Change the Visibility of your Syllabus
To restrict syllabus access to only registered students:
- Go to Settings at the bottom of your course navigation.
- In the Course Details tab, scroll down the page to locate the Visibility section and select Course for Syllabus.
- Click Update Course Details.
To open syllabus access to the public:
- Go to Settings at the bottom of your course navigation.
- In the Course Details tab, scroll down the page to locate the Visibility section and select Public for Syllabus.
- Click Update Course Details.
How to Create a Draft Version of your Syllabus
If you are building rich syllabus content (multiple files, inline text, embedded media) but are not yet ready to make it visible, you can 1) temporarily reduce visibility of the syllabus, as described above or 2) use the Pages tool to build your draft. Once the content is finalized and ready for students to see, copy and paste your draft content into the Syllabus tool.
*The default for the Graduate School of Business is for course syllabi to be available to course members only.
