Enable Gradescope in Canvas and link Gradescope course to Canvas course
- Go to Settings > Navigation tab, drag Gradescope from the bottom of the page to the active tool list and click Save. [If your department has chosen to make Gradescope visible in the course navigation by default, you can skip this step.]
- Once that is done, click Gradescope in the Canvas course navigation. You will be prompted to create a new Gradescope course or link to an existing Gradescope course. If you choose to link to an existing Gradescope course, select it from the drop-down menu. Select Link Course.
- Edit the Gradescope course settings as desired and select Update Course to finish.
Import your Canvas roster into Gradescope
- In your Gradescope course, select Roster in the left hand navigation, then select Sync Stanford Canvas Roster.
- In the confirmation page, select Sync Roster.
- Students and teaching staff from your Canvas course will be added and will show a link icon in the Stanford Canvas column.
- Make sure to repeat this process prior to grading assignments to ensure Gradescope has the latest enrollment updates.
Create new Gradescope assignment within Canvas - quick setup
You will need to create an assignment in Canvas and link it to a Gradescope assignment in order to import grades from Gradescope. Make sure to publish the Canvas assignment, so it will appear in the Canvas Grades tool. If you want to prevent students from seeing or getting notified about the grades, set the assignment to Manual Posting Policy in the Canvas Grades tool. If you want to customize settings within the Canvas assignment, skip to the next section and follow those instructions.
- Go to Assignments in Canvas.
- Select Gradescope from the Options menu (three-dot icon in upper right of screen).
- You will be prompted to choose between creating a new assignment or linking to an existing assignment. Select the new assignment option and select Link Assignment.
- Go through the steps to create a new assignment in Gradescope and select Create Assignment. A matching assignment will be created in both Gradescope and Canvas.
- If you need to edit any Canvas assignment settings, select Edit from the Options menu to the right of the assignment title in the main Canvas Assignments page.
Create new Gradescope assignment within Canvas - customize Canvas assignment settings
You will need to create an assignment in Canvas and link it to a Gradescope assignment in order to import grades from Gradescope. Make sure to publish the Canvas assignment, so it will appear in the Canvas Grades tool. If you want to prevent students from seeing or getting notified about the grades, set the assignment to Manual Posting Policy in the Canvas Grades tool. The following steps will allow you to customize the Canvas assignments settings and add a description at the same time as creating a new Gradescope assignment.
- Go to Assignments in Canvas.
- Select + Assignment in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Enter the assignment title and description. Customize settings as desired.
- In the Submission Type drop-down menu, select External Tool. Select Find, then select Gradescope in the tool list that pops up.
- You will be prompted to choose between creating a new assignment or linking to an existing assignment. Select the new assignment option and select Link Assignment.
- Go through the steps to create a new assignment in Gradescope and select Create Assignment. A matching assignment will be created in both Gradescope and Canvas.
- You will be brought back to the tool selection list. Click the Select button to return to the Canvas Assignments creation page.
- Select the Save or Save and Publish option at the bottom of the page when finished. Although you will need to publish in order to import grades from Gradescope into the Canvas gradebook, you don't need to do that right away. Use the Save option to keep the assignment in draft mode.
- A matching assignment will be created in both Gradescope and Canvas. Besides the linking of assignments, which you can only do in Canvas, you can edit assignment settings in either Gradescope or Canvas.
Link an existing Gradescope assignment to Canvas
You will need to create an assignment in Canvas and link it to a Gradescope assignment in order to import grades from Gradescope. Make sure to publish the Canvas assignment, so it will appear in the Canvas Grades tool. If you want to prevent students from seeing or getting notified about the grades, set the assignment to Manual Posting Policy in the Canvas Grades tool.
- Use either of the methods above to create a new Canvas assignment, using the Options menu and selecting Gradescope or using the + Assignment button.
- When the Link to Stanford Canvas assignment appears, select the 'An existing Gradescope assignment' option, then select the desired course from the drop-down menu and click Link Assignment.
- If using the Options > Gradescope method, the Canvas Assignments page will load with the newly created assignment and be linked to the selected Gradescope assignment. To edit any Canvas assignment settings, select Edit from the Options menu to the right of the assignment title in the main Canvas Assignments page.
- If using the + Assignment method, you will be taken back to the Canvas assignment creation page. Select the Save or Save and Publish option at the bottom of the page when finished.
Upload grades to Canvas
You can upload grades to Canvas within the standalone Gradescope web site, within the Gradescope tool linked to the Canvas tool navigation or within the particular Canvas assignment.
- Select the desired assignment in the Gradescope Dashboard or Assignments page or view the linked assignment in Canvas.
- Select Review Grades in the Gradescope left hand navigation.
- In the lower right corner, select Post Grades to Stanford Canvas.
- In the confirmation page, click the Post Grades button.
- A status bar will appear and show the message “Grades successfully posted to Stanford Canvas” when finished. The grades will now appear in the Canvas Grades tool.
