Panopto automatically imports recordings of meetings created in the Canvas Zoom tool and allows teaching team members to manually upload additional videos. These videos are available to your course until after the quarter ends, after which time they are only available to course staff.
While Panopto recordings are available during the quarter, the videos are visible to everyone who has access to your Canvas course unless you ask Canvas Help for assistance in managing your permissions manually. Canvas course visibility is set to course members only by default, but a greater audience could have access to your course if you’ve set your course visibility to Institution.
Extending length of access to course members
There are steps to take if you wish to give some or all members extended access to Panopto videos that protect copyrights.
Reusing recordings for later academic terms
FERPA protects the privacy of student enrollment data, so student identity must be hidden in recording you plan to reuse in future terms. Please see this Zoom article about what it takes to record and share a meeting you plan in a future academic term.
Sharing recordings with people who are not enrolled
If you are changing the visibility of your course to Institution, you are agreeing to the following:
Copyright: I understand the TEACH Act and that, since my online class is open to non-enrolled students, I cannot include other’s copyrighted work within recordings of my lectures or any part of my Canvas course unless I specifically secure the rights to use the works in this context or the works meet the criteria for Fair Use.
Privacy: I understand my responsibilities under FERPA to keep all course materials and content that include students’ personally identifiable information (PII) restricted to course enrollees, instructors, and other authorized individuals.
Guest speakers in my Zoom meetings will sign this Online Speaker Release form.
