When are courses created in Canvas?

The information below is intended to act as a guide for the Canvas course creation timeline. The dates and months are subject to change, depending on changes to the university academic calendar.

Fall Courses: End of July, at least a week before Axess registration opens. Departments are still updating their course data in July, removing courses that will not be taught in the upcoming academic year. We want to capture as many of those updates as possible, while still giving instructors time to post their syllabi before course registration begins in August.

Winter Courses: Mid-October. Course shells for Winter and Spring quarters are created after the add/drop period of the previous quarter, which ends after the third week of the quarter. Winter courses typically are created in mid-October.

Spring Courses: End of January. Course shells for Winter and Spring quarters are created after the add/drop period of the previous quarter, which ends after the third week of the quarter. Spring courses are typically created at the end of January.

Summer Courses: End of March. Since Axess registration for summer courses starts in early April, Summer courses are typically created in late March, before the add/drop period for Spring. Due to changes to the 2020-2021 academic calendar, enrollment for Summer 2021 starts on May 23. Therefore, Summer 2021 Canvas courses will be created on April 26 (ready no later than April 27).
