Create Modules

The Modules tool allows instructors to organize course content in an organizational structure (based by weeks, units, etc.). Modules link to existing Canvas content (assignments, quizzes, etc.) or to external content. Each module will consist of as many items (assignments, quizzes, files, etc.) as you'd like and can be released on a certain date or by completing requirements set by the instructor.

To get started, create a new module and add items to the module.

  1. Click Modules on the lefthand course navigation.
  2. Click +Modules.
Button to add a new module
  3. Give the module a name (e.g., Week 1).
  4. Click Add Module.
  5. To add items to the module, click on the + sign to the right of the module you just created.
Arrow pointing to the + icon in a module
  6. Next to Add, select the drop-down arrow and choose the type of content you'd like to add.
  7. If you've already created the content in the course, select the item from the dropdown menu. If you haven't, you can create content now. If you've chosen "External URL", you will need to paste in the URL.
  8. Click Add Item.

Note: Items added to a module that are not yet published in the original location will not be accessible to students until the original content is published. For example, if a file is linked in Modules and the module is published but the file is not published, students will not be able to view the file.

To confirm whether students can access (or not access) certain Modules content, use the Student View feature.
